Estonia

The first detailed study of Estonian politics during the 1930s, this book examines the Estonian Veterans' League which won a majority in a referendum for its constitutional amendment creating a strong presidency. The Veterans appeared set to triumph in the 1934 elections, but were thwarted by the establishment of an authoritarian regime. By using formerly unobtainable archival records, this study fills a considerable gap in the literature on the Baltic states and should be appealing to those interested in fascism.

Estonia

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, nationality groups have claimed sovereignty in the new republics bearing their names. With the ascendance of these titular nationality groups, Russian speakers living in the post-Soviet republics face a radical crisis of identity. That crisis is at the heart of David D. Laitin's keenly awaited book.

Laitin portrays these Russian speakers as a "beached diaspora" since the populations did not cross international borders; the borders themselves receded. He asks what will become of these populations. Will they learn the languages of the republics in which they live and prepare their children for assimilation? Will they return to a homeland many have never seen? Or will they become loyal citizens of the new republics while maintaining a Russian identity? Through questions such as these and on the basis of ethnographic field research, discourse analysis, and mass surveys, Laitin analyzes trends in four post-Soviet republics: Estonia, Latvia, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine.

Laitin concludes that the "Russian-speaking population" is a new category of identity in the post-Soviet world. This conglomerate identity of those who share a language is analogous, Laitin suggests, to such designations as "Palestinian" in the Middle East and "Hispanic" in the United States. The development of this new identity has implications both for the success of the national projects in these states and for interethnic peace.

Estonia

In this comprehensive survey of Estonian history, Toivo Raun places recent events into historical perspective with up-to-date information on the era of glasnost and perestroika (1985-1991), analyzing the striking process of rebirth, renewal, and de-Sovietization. He stresses the role of Estonia's strategic geopolitical location and the small number of ethnic Estonians as crucial factors that have shaped the history of the area and its inhabitants. Since prehistoric times Estonia has been a crossroads of northeastern Europe where the major powers of the region have struggled for influence. Estonia and the Estonians offers a balanced topical survey covering political history, the economy, social and demographic developments, and cultural life. Attention is also paid to historiography and to differing interpretations of major issues; throughout the book the history of Estonia is viewed in the larger context of northern and eastern Europe.

Estonia

The book presents the history of Estonia in easily readable form and with compassion for the people whose lives were affected by the events that occurred in the Baltic region. The prolonged occupation of the Baltic region by different European nations not only caused great hardships for the Estonian people, but it also integrated them into the western European cultural community. In that sense, the history of Estonia has had a happy ending. After seven centuries of domination by foreign powers, the people of Estonia are now free, they are well educated, they are creative, they are hard-working, and they are patriotic. The Republic of Estonia has earned the respect and admiration of the people of the world and deserves to be recognized as a modern and successful nation.

Estonia

With the exception of Poland, no region or territory suffered more greatly during World War II than the Baltic States. Caught between the giants of the Soviet Union and the Third Reich, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia became pawns in the desperate battle for control of Eastern Europe throughout the course of World War II. This is a story of conquest and exploitation, of death and deportation and the fight for survival both by countries and individuals. The three states were repeatedly occupied -- by the Soviet Union in 1939, by Germany in 1941, and again by the Soviet Union in 1944-45. In each case, local government organizations and individuals were forced to choose between supporting the occupying forces or forming partisan units. Many would be caught up in the bitter fighting in the region and, in particular, in the huge battles for the Courland bridgehead during Operation Bagration when hundreds of thousands of soldiers would fight and die in the last year of the war. Over 300,000 Soviet troops would be lost during the repeated assaults on the 'Courland Cauldron' before 146,000 German and Latvia troops were finally forced to surrender. No mercy was shown and all Latvians, Lithuanians, and Estonians who fought for Germany were executed. By the end of the war, death and deportation had cost the Baltic States over 20 percent of their total population and the iron curtain would descend on the region for over four decades. Using numerous first-hand accounts and detailed archival research, Prit Buttar weaves a magisterial account of the bitter fighting on the Eastern Front and the three small states whose fates were determined by the fortunes and misfortunes of war.

The SS-Panzergrenadier Battalion Narwa was the first combat ready element of the Estonian Legion of the Waffen-SS. It was sent to join the 5 SS-Panzergrenadier Division Wiking in April 1943 as a replacement for the Finnish Volunteer Battalion of the Waffen-SS, which was being withdrawn to its homeland. In the course of a little less than a year of service with the Wiking Division, the Estonian volunteers of Battalion Narwa made their mark as skilled, competent, motivated soldiers who could always be counted on to do their duty despite the odds against them. In short, they very much impressed their European comrades in Wiking with their steadfastness and courage. This book constitutes a brief tribute to the soldiers of Battalion Narwa using many hitherto unseen photographs from veterans that are now in the archives of Erik Rundkvist. They give a good impression of the calibre of soldiers that manned SS-Panzergrenadier Battalion Narwa as they fought for the freedom of their Baltic homeland and for the cause of European civilisation.

Formation of a Folklorist is the eighteenth volume to be published by Comhairle Bhéaloideas Éirann in its series Scríbhinní Béaloidis / Folklore Studies. This volume traces the process that saw the development of James Hamilton Delargy / Séamus Ó Duilearga (1899-1980), a promising, young Irish academic with a practical knowledge of aspects of folklore, into a formidable authority on that subject and likewise on the methods and stratagems best suited to its future documentation and study in Ireland. Delargy's trajectory from graduate student, university teacher and talented local collector to the luminary who masterminded the creation of one of the world's best folklore collections is revealed in diary and personal notes, and correspondence with leading experts in the field, other close advisors at home and abroad, and family members. The founding of the Folklore of Ireland Society in 1926 led to the establishment of the Irish Folklore Institute (1930-1935) and, subsequently, the spectacularly successful Irish Folklore Commission (193501971), in all of which organisations, Delargy played a leading role. The work begun then continues today under the auspices of the National Folklore Collection in the UCD Delargy Centre for Irish Folklore at University College Dublin. In a lifetime dedicated to fulfilling the lofty aims he set himself as a young man, Delargy repaid in full his debt to all who had placed their confidence in him. The remarkable story of how the foundation for that achievement was laid is told here to a large extent in his own words.

Estonia

Peter Mender was born into an Estonian seafaring family on a Baltic Sea island. He began working on ships at age 15 and left home at 18 to work on sailing ships around the world. In 1907, after qualifying as a captain or Master Mariner, he ventured to the Far East and worked out of Vladivostok for 12 years, sailing to places including Japan, China, French Indo-China and the Russian Far Eastern coast. Hired by Standard Oil in 1919, Mender moved to Shanghai and spent 14 years working on the scenic but hazardous Upper Yangtze River, most of which is now submerged under the Three Gorges Dam reservoir. With some protection provided by American and other western gunboats, Mender’s ships survived ongoing attacks by bandits, frequent skirmishes between Chinese warlords, and nearly annual Sino-Japanese conflicts. His planned retirement from Standard Oil, after almost 19 years of service in China, coincided with the bombing and sinking of his ship Mei Ping on the Yangtze River during the U.S.S. Panay convoy incident of December 12, 1937. Mender was awarded the U.S. Navy Expeditionary Medal for his service during this incident.

After retiring, Mender returned home to Estonia and wrote his memoirs. During WWII, he and his family were able to escape the invading Soviets and made their way to settle in the United States. Mender's memoirs describe a nautical life of a bygone era, in a region of the world still subject to instability.

Estonia

The New Estonian Golden Age introduces an alternative view on age-old and controversial topics that are holding up Estonian aspirations of prosperity. Estonia, known as "The Baltic Tiger", is one of New Europe's most impressive economic turn-around stories since gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. They implemented innovative ideas such as flat tax, online voting and e-government. At one point, the leaders were predicting that Estonia would become one of Europe's five richest nations. Now the nation is on the verge of an unprecedented economic crisis, the leaders have retracted this statement as too ambitious. This book contends that if leaders combine pragmatic long term vision with bold decisions, the dream can still come true.

Estonia

Flashes in the Night captures the tragic story of the sinking of M/S Estonia in dark, cold Baltic waters on September 28, 1994. Caught in a storm during an overnight trip between Tallinn, Estonia, and Stockholm, Sweden, the ship sank in a matter of minutes. Debate continues over whether the cause was structural or sabotage, but the fact remains 852 souls were lost at sea in Europe's worst civilian disaster. Nearly one-third of those who escaped the ship died of hypothermia. A twenty-nine-year-old Swedish entrepreneur and a pretty nineteen-year-old Swedish girl are a major focus of this dramatic account. On that night when Kent Harstedt met Sara Hedrenius on the top rail of the sinking ship, they made a date for dinner in Stockholm-if they survived. Through that endless darkness, huddled in near-freezing water in their raft, they told each other jokes to stay awake and alive. Their date made world headlines. This is their story, and the story of the young British adventurer Paul Barney, along with riveting accounts of others who were a part of this harrowing life-or-death survival epic.

Keen to cushion themselves against a revolutionary and unstable Russia, the Allies enthusiastically accepted the demands made by the Baltic states. Before long, however, this intended buffer zone became a cordon for the Soviets against the West, with Russia's influence fluctuating in these territories ever since.

Estonia

The three so-called ‘Baltic states’ – Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania – are commonly regarded by outsiders as a single entity. In reality, these are separate, quite distinct countries, each continually struggling to find their own place within Europe whilst preserving their local identity. Baltic Facades presents a radical new reading of the region, one that dispels the myth of a single, coherent Baltic identity. Instead Aldis Purs takes account of the uniqueness of each of these countries, whilst also examining the shared anxiety that the people of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania feel about their own identities and how others see them. Purs locates the three countries within the larger context of European history, stressing their similarities with the rest of the continent rather than their differences. Giving equal weight to developments in politics, economics, and social and cultural trends, Purs develops a thematic framework that places contemporary events in a longer perspective than traditional Cold War inspired views of the region. This title will appeal to the intellectually curious reader, one who seeks an account of the Baltic nations that provides a strong sense of place and goes beyond the confines of traditional political history.

Are you online and ready for global smart card and database genealogy for virtual travelers? Here’s how to search family history for nations bordering the Baltic Sea, the Balkans countries, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East.

The nations listed in this guide (all faiths) include Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Armenia, Assyria, Greece, Lebanon, Syria, and many other lands in the Middle East, the Balkans—Croatia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Eastern Europe—Hungary, and more.

Collecting details about people is moving toward smart card technology and its offspring. The new wave in genealogy is authentication technology. Authentication begins with new-wave technology used to gather population registers.

Compare the new technology to the old method of door-to-door census taking, tombstone tracings, and city directory publishing. No, genealogists are not using smart cards this year, but smart card technology is being used to compile population registers in Europe.

The future holds a new wave of technology used for authentication for banking transactions being applied to other areas. Currently this technology is used for collecting details for population registrars such as census taking.

The application for research is of interest to family historians, librarians, and governments. It’s already in use by private industry for electronic authentication.

Family history is now about intelligent connections, whether it’s a population registrar, census detail, or electronic identity for banking. Smart card genealogy began in 1998 in Finland with governments seeking to put census and population registers in an electronic form that would be available to researchers, and these applications are going global.

In describing the battles that were waged between the Red Army and the German armed forces, the author mainly concentrates on the fate of the Estonians who fought on the German side. The last chapter in the book tells of the failed attempt to regain independence at the end of the war.
